Students are expected to understand how to check their school email account from school and from another location, such as home. WHAT GUARDIANS CAN DO TO HELP: The biggest problem in this area is remembering the school email address. In order to protect students' identification and privacy, students email addresses are no longer studentidnumber@ students.olatheschools.com. Instead, they follow this pattern:
Last 3 Digits of Student ID
First Initial
Middle Initial
Last Name
Day of Birth
For example, a student with the ID number 888222 named John James Doe born on the 3rd of the month will have a student email address of 222jjdoe03@students.olatheschools.com
This is such an integral part of this classroom! Blackboard is much like a any other website; however, students must log on using their student ID number and password. There will be many instances in which students will be expected to download items off of Blackboard for assignments or participate in discussion boards. In addition, each day's activities are posted. WHAT GUARDIANS CAN DO TO HELP: The number one way you can assist me is to make every effort to have your student in class. Of course, this cannot happen all the time for every student. So, please be sure that your student checks Blackboard for each absence before returning to school if at all possible.
Plagiarism, or academic dishonesty, is major problem in any academic setting. My goal is to PREVENT cheating from happening rather than spend all my time CATCHING students who have cheated. The plagiarism detection system Turnitin.com is a requirement for almost all of the written work in this class. This system scours the Internet, as well as its own massive databases, to detect similarities in content. I truly believe that if students know that we are using this system, they will be less likely to plagiarize and be more conscious of academic dishonesty. WHAT GUARDIANS CAN DO TO HELP: Encourage your student to be honest in his/her academic career. We all get overwhelmed at some point, and we all just don't feel like doing what we're supposed to when we are supposed to. It is truly better for your student to turn something in late rather than plagiarize. In addition, be aware that plagiarism isn't always a conscious act. If a student unknowingly copies and pastes information from an Internet site and doesn't cite that source, he/she is committing plagiarism. This is why raised awareness over plagiarism is so important. For more information about plagiarism, click here.
Throughout the school year, students will be expected to complete several important inquiry-based research papers. For these papers, students should use the many databases the ONW library has purchased. These databases include some of the most accurate and respected journals, magazines, and other publications in the world. WHAT GUARDIANS CAN DO TO HELP: While research is also conducted in class, there will be times when your students needs to access these databases outside of the confines of the class period. These can be accessed from home, or from a local library. In addition, students can use the ONW Library Media Center before/after school. Students can find these databases by visiting the ONW Library site . Note that some of the databases require a password, which the librarian provides all students.
My files is an online resource through which students can access their H: drive. It looks a little different than the H: drive at school, but it contains the same files. Access student files by clicking on "Network Resources," and inputting the student ID and password, just like a student would do to log into the computer at school. WHAT GUARDIANS CAN DO TO HELP: Help remind students that important files for assignments can be "backed up" several ways: on the handheld computer, on a disk/CD, via email as an attachment, and on the H: drive. It is always wise to use more than one method.
