Course Description
This course is a study of the child care provider’s interrelationships with parents, colleagues, and the community.  Topics included are public relations, asset building, evaluations, parent meetings, advertising, and professionalism.  We will look at various personalities and parenting styles and learn effective ways to deal with diversity.

Course Goals
1. Knowing about and understanding family and community characteristics

2. Supporting and empowering families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships
3. Involving families and communities in their children’s development and learning
4. Knowing about and using observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and approaches
5. Understanding and practicing responsible assessment
6. Knowing about and upholding ethical standards and other professional guidelines.
7. Engaging in informed advocacy for children and the profession

Course Outcomes
1. Students will develop good communication skills and techniques for dealing with a variety of situations. 
2. Students will understand the significance of good provider / parent relations.  Students will conduct parent meetings, complete newsletters, and bulletin boards.
3. Students will understand and develop techniques that encourage and increase parent and community involvement.
4. Students will learn to collaborate with other community organizations to benefit all involved.
5. Students will learn ways to evaluate children, and communicate those findings to parents.
6. The Students will learn ways to advocate for children and for quality child care.
